Blues Scale

When the blues is played the way to form a melody is to use a scale. The best scale to use when playing the blues is the blues scale. This scale will work over all 12 bars and give you an interesting selection of notes to invent some melodies.

This is the blues scale in C major. Any of these notes, in any order, anywhere on the piano will work to create a melody.

Have a play around on this scale and see if you can make up some tunes!

One way of "decorating" this blues scale and to make it sound more interesting is to add what are called top harmonies to the black notes in the scale.

For example, when playing a phrase always add the A on the top of the E flat.

Now have a play around with adding top harmonies to some of your phrases you made up before.
